US Chaos, Freddy Pompeii of the Viletones, Revilers, Doomed to Obscurity, Missile Toads Live @ Kung Fu Necktie July 21, 2012 Review

When I create the Up To No Good Radio Approved Events listing, there are shows that I would like to go to and then there are shows I HAVE to go to. This was indeed one that I had to attend!

This was my first gig at Philadelphia's Kung Fu Necktie. $2 beer specials (for my Up To No Good fellow DJ - Reds) and $1 bottled water (for the rest of us) made the drinking easy. Street parking was readily available. The small bar held the 70-100 people almost perfectly. The only minus, my wife was extremely disgusted with the "ladies" room.

I was looking forward to witnessing Black Hole Records executives perform in their Christmas punk band Missile Toads for my first time live.

If you haven't heard "Santa's A Boozer", done to the tune of the Dead Boys' "Sonic Reducer", or "Reindeer In The Night", done to the tune of Blitz's "Razors in the Night" you need to get with the program!

Next up was my first live introduction to Philadelphia's Doomed to Obscurity.

DTO have a great driving punk sound. Tight live performance. You can tell Doomed To Obscurity know what the hell they are doing. Vocalist Billy Garvey put on a hell of a show, even in an obvious state of physically rebuilding after coming down a few stories off of some scaffolding.

Revilers, debut LP (reviewed here) is undoubtedly one of my favorite punk releases of 2012. Refreshing, strong and pointed (blunt) are words I would use to describe Revilers. The record is a split release among Black Hole / Patac / 4subculture / Contra Records.

Dave who provides the pounding beats for Revilers offered up this advice about listening to Up To No Good Radio. As we were chatting outside the Kung Fu Necktie, the rest of his band noticed how the sweat he produced from rocking the beats left an obscene residual visual on his pants, resulting in the following ID for Up To No Good Radio.

Got to talk to Andy of Revilers outside the Kung Fu Necktie and found out he was in a few bands and our paths had to have crossed at some point, as one of his previous bands played Scarlet's in Bethlehem PA. He was kind enough to do this ID for Up To No Good Radio. We talked straight edge, hardcore, Youth of Today, 7 Seconds, Uniform Choice and East Coast contrasted with West Coast.

For those completely out of the punk rock loop, the Viletones were a Toronto based Canadian punk band that began in the late 70s. There at the beginning, Freddy Pompeii is a punk legend.

I have been freakishly blessed this year, seeing bands that I never would have thought I'd get to see in my lifetime, never mind in 2012. Cock Sparrer, Cockney Rejects, Corrosion of Conformity ("Animosity" era lineup - well, I actually have seen this lineup about a dozen times during the "Animosity" era, but was glad to see it again) and at this gig, Freddy Pompeii of the Viletones and U.S. Chaos.
